Baby Cereal Teething Biscuits Recipe

From the pantry:

2 tablespoons shortening
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups baby cereal
1 egg
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 teaspoon water

Preheat oven to 300 degrees F

In medium size bowl, cream together shortening and sugar.

Mix in egg, baking powder, salt, vanilla extract and water until well blended.

Stir cereal into mixture and knead until smooth.

Form dough into rectangle shape.

Cut 12 (1-inch) bars and place on ungreased cookie sheet. Make sure edges are smooth before baking.

Bake for 20 to 30 minutes or until dry.

Store in uncovered container overnight.

*For a flavor variety can substitute your baby’s favorite juice for liquid content.

How Long Should I Breastfeed?

The length of time you commit to for breastfeeding is a personal choice between a mother and her baby. Some mothers commit to doing if for the amount of time they are off for maternity leave while others decide between six months to a year.

A little known fact is that the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends two years at least as best due to the low rate of illnesses in children attributed to extended breastfeeding.

Baby Food Safety

Some thought to safety is important when feeding an infant. From the earliest age parents have to worry about feeding foods that are too hot or food contamination. When the baby is older, parents need to consider if the food is a chocking hazard.

Here are a few tips to alleviate worry:

Stir foods that have been heated and test how hot it is. Touching the liquid or a drop of the food to the wrist is still an old favorite to see if a food is too hot for baby’s mouth.

If saving money and avoiding food waste is a goal, make sure to dish out small servings of baby food during meal time. To avoid illness from food contamination, do not feed a baby food that has been previously eaten and dispose of food older than 2 days.

Avoid foods that can cause choking. Most snack foods (popcorn, nuts, raisins and potato chips), certain cereals, including dry flake cereal, berries and grapes, raw vegetables and whole kernel corn, hot dogs, and peanut butter.

Use proper feeding utensils and drink contains to avoid choking during meal time in your baby or toddler. Smaller spoons should be used to feed babies and bottles with nipples or sippy cups should not cause choking.

The best tip of all is to be present when your baby or toddler is eating or drinking. It is important that you watch them and are aware if they are having any difficulties.

Feeding Baby Food: 1 Year of Age and Older

After a baby reaches the one year milestone, they can graduate from formula and/or breastmilk to whole milk. During this time baby is receiving the most nutritiion from their diet consisting of meats, fruits, vegetables, breads, cereals and grains.

It is a new world for the parents and for baby. They are branching out now into the world of a toddler. While they may not grow as fast as they did as a baby, they still require nourishment frequently to make up for the energy they use throughout the day.

It is important to keep an eye on them when they eat and drink since they still may have trouble with certain cuts of food or managing drinks in different cups.

Remember to keep their diet well balanced with a variety being offered from all food groups throughout the day.
